At its core, the ATS-909X2 features DSP-based digital tuning combined with multiple tuning methods, including direct frequency entry, rotary tuning, auto scan (ATS), and fine-tuning steps down to 10 Hz. This level of control allows users to precisely lock onto weak or distant signals, especially when using Single Sideband (SSB) reception for amateur and utility transmissions.

The radio offers extensive memory capacity, with up to 1674 preset stations organized across multiple pages and bands, allowing detailed organization of frequencies by region, band, or preference.

Reception performance is further enhanced with adjustable RF gain, selectable bandwidth filters, squelch control, and a high-sensitivity DSP tuner. These tools help optimize signal clarity in challenging environments and reduce interference for clearer audio.
