The iFi hip-dac 3 is designed to improve headphone sound from smartphones, tablets, laptops, PCs and Macs by replacing the basic internal DAC and amplifier found in many devices. Its compact aluminum body is easy to carry, while its dedicated battery-powered design helps deliver stronger, cleaner output than a typical dongle-style adapter.
Inside, the hip-dac 3 uses a Burr-Brown True Native DAC chipset paired with a 16-core XMOS processor for high-resolution digital audio processing. It supports PCM and DXD up to 384 kHz, DSD64, DSD128 and DSD256, plus full MQA decoding for compatible music files and streaming services.
The amplifier section features a true balanced circuit design and offers both 4.4 mm balanced and 3.5 mm single-ended headphone outputs. The 3.5 mm output uses iFi’s S-Balanced circuitry to help reduce crosstalk and distortion when using standard single-ended headphones. Balanced output provides up to 400 mW at 32 ohms, giving the hip-dac 3 enough power for a wide range of portable and full-size headphones.
The hip-dac 3 also includes iFi’s analogue sound-adjustment features. PowerMatch adjusts gain for easier-to-drive or more demanding headphones, iEMatch helps optimize output for sensitive in-ear monitors, and XBass adds analogue bass correction for headphones that need more low-frequency weight. Separate USB-C ports for audio and charging simplify daily use, while the 2,200 mAh battery provides up to 12 hours of playback depending on headphone load and settings.
